Indicted for
Stealing Samsung Semiconductor Technology...
February 5, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ South Korean
prosecutors have indicted 18 people for stealing
Samsung semiconductor technology and passing it to
rival Hynix Semiconductor Inc, the AP reports. Some
of the people involved in the scandal are employees
of US-based Allied Materials and its South Korean
branch. Prosecutors say Allied employees, who had
access to Samsung's core technology as they
participated in the installation and maintenance of
Samsung's manufacturing equipment, obtained the
technology and passed it to Hynix. "We are very
concerned by this transgression, as it is likely to
damage the semiconductor market," Samsung
spokeswoman Lee Soo-jeong told the AP. Read more

TOYOTA IS RECALLING 250,000 PRIUS

/EIN PRESSWIRE/ Toyota is preparing its second
recall in recent weeks as sources report Toyota will
recall its 2010 Prius Hybrid to inspect the braking
system. The announcement could come as early as
Tuesday. The recall is expected to net more than
250,000 Prius vehicles, although that number could
go as high as 300,000. The recall will affect
third-generation Prius models. Toyota has already
recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide due
to an issue with the accelerators in several vehicle

share of royalties.

and Order giving Native American tribes priority to

IN THE VIDEO DISTRIBUTION
MARKET, Washington, DC, Jan 20, 2010...From the
Commission, The FCC took a step to promote competition
and innovation in the video distribution market by
establishing a process for considering complaints about
the availability of terrestrially delivered, cable
affiliated programming. This addresses what is
called the "terrestrial loophole". These new rules
allow DBS, telcos, and other competitors to obtain more
of the "must have" programming. The FCC order has
the authority under section 628(B) to take action if a
cable operator engages in unfair acts with respect to
terrestrially delivered cable affiliated programming.
Complaints will be handled on a case by case basis.

FCC RULING
CONSIDERED A VICTORY FOR SPORTS FANS THANKS TO
VERIZON®, Washington, DC, Jan 20, 2010...The
FCC ruled (1/20/10) today that incumbent television
providers that control unique regional sports
broadcasting can no longer refuse to provide
high definition feeds to
competitors. This decision will benefit
Verizon® who had filed a complaint with the FCC as well
as other providers and consumers. Kathleen
Grillo, Verizon Senior VP of Federal Regulatory affairs
had this comment. "This is a big-time victory for
television sports fans. The FCC's decision to make
must-see regional sports programming, including
high-definition feeds, presumptively available to
competitors, puts viewers in the driver's seat.
This ruling means that consumers will no longer have to
stick with their incumbent cable provider in order to
watch local teams in high definition."

Haiti, Mr.
Montàigne Marcelin, the Director General of Conatel, for
the first time since our initial outreach soon after the
earthquake. Though he survived, two of his staff did
not, several are injured, and the agency's buildings are
destroyed. We stand ready to assist Mr. Marcelin and his
agency in any way that we can.
"Every aspect of life in
Haiti has
been terribly affected by the devastating earthquake,
and the communications sector is no exception. The
immediate issues of concern are continuity of service by
existing telecommunications companies, which are
providing essential communications for Haitians and the
disaster relief efforts, and their ongoing operational
challenges such as access to fuel and security. "Haiti
also can benefit from deployment of temporary
communications in the country, including at refugee
sites. Many companies have made significant offers of
help, and urgent efforts are underway to coordinate and
deliver assistance."

SOUND ADVICE FROM THE
INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION
TO KEEP DTV VOLUME IN CHECK,
Geneva, Jan 18, 2010...A new ITU standard on digital
audio levels fro broadcast TV is on the table aimed at
putting an end to annoying variations in sound volume
between programs and commercials. It is a
fact that many viewers are irritated when changing
channels or when a TV station cuts to a commercial break
that often audio levels go all over the place.
Viewers wrongly blame the volume differences on careless
sound technicians or deliberate practices of
Broadcasters and their advertisers. To rectify the
problem the ITU says there should be a new type of
"loudness monitors" for the
Broadcast stations and an agreement on a standard
setting level. This new standard will complement the
ITU-R BS.1770 which describes features of the loudness
meter. The ITU will meet again in April 2010 to

FCC ADOPTS ORDER TO CLEAR
THE 700 MHZ
WIRELESS MICROPHONE BAND FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND 4G,
Washington, DC, Jan 15, 2010...The FCC adopted a Further
Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to further prohibit the
sale of devices that operate in the 700 MHZ band.
This action helps DTV Transition by clearing out the 700
MHZ band to enable rollout of services for public safety
and the deployment of next generation 4G wireless
devices for consumers. The order is primarily for
what impact the use of wireless
microphone systems that currently operate in the
700 MHZ band has. These unlicensed devices cannot
continue to operate in this band because they may cause
harmful interference to public safety entities and next
generation 4G wireless. In
order to ensure that individuals and groups currently
using unauthorized devices in this band the FCC is
providing a sunset period until June 12, 2010, exactly
one year from the DTV transition date after which they
cannot be used. Thus also, the FCC is
making it clear that no devices (including wireless
microphones) utilizing this frequency band may be sold
or distributed. The CTIA had this to say
about the above FCC action: “Today’s action by the
Chairman and Commissioners represents the next critical
step in the DTV Transition. The Order will help
ensure that harmful interference does not hamper
commercial wireless carriers’ 4th Generation deployment
plans, which promise to increase mobile broadband
availability and adoption, as well as create much needed
jobs. The Order also will protect public safety from
harmful interference that could jeopardize lifesaving
missions. We thank Chairman Genachowski and the Wireless
Bureau for leading this effort and the Commissioners for
their help in getting this spectrum cleared for next
generation broadband. We look forward to working
with the Commission and other interested parties on this

ADVISORY REGARDING REGULATORY OBLIGATIONS THAT APPLY TO
THE WIRELESS INDUSTRY, FCC, Washington, DC, Jan
15, 2010...The enforcement action was taken against
several companies for their failure to provide
information that helps individuals with hearing
disabilities fully utilize wireless phone services.
FCC rules requires most digital wireless handset
manufacturers and wireless service providers to make
available a minimum number of "hearing aid" compatible
handsets. The rules of concern were the FCC's
requirement to submit reports detailing their efforts
toward compliance with the "hearing aid."
Total forfeitures amounted to $87,000.

BRITAIN'S BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE LAGS BEHIND THE
REST OF THE WORLD, London, UK, October 2, 2009...The
US firm Cisco® release a global study on Broadband and
the study showed the UK was lagging behind its
Asian and European neighbors in terms of quality of the
broadband infrastructure. The average broadband
speed in the UK is 4MBS versus a global average of
4.75MBS. Comparatively Japans has broadband speeds
of 90MBS and Korea 40MBS respectively. The reason
for this it that the majority of broadband users in the
UK are using DSL which being on copper twisted pair has
some speed limitations. It was estimated by Cisco
that the average each country should have to "be
comfortable" would be 11.25MBS download and 5MBS upload
in order to handle future applications like HD video.
Currently in the US the FCC is still trying to determine

HEALTH ORGANIZATION LOWERS RADON ACTION LEVEL

/EIN Presswire/ Radon gas has been identified as the
leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers
according to recent studies conducted throughout the
world. The World Health Organization states that as
many as 14% of the lung cancer cases in many
countries (including the United States) are caused
by exposure to radon gas. The World Health
Organization has released their Handbook on Indoor
Radon which strongly validates the worldwide threat
of exposure to radon gas. According to handbook, WHO
has been studying the effects of radon exposure
since 1979. Although radon was classified as a human
carcinogen in 1988, it took over 20-years of sound
research and real-life studies from all over the
world to confirm the true magnitude of the risk
radon poses. Based on the results of these studies,
WHO now suggests that homeowners take action when
radon levels exceed 2.7 pCi/l. This is a much more
conservative figure than the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA's) action level of 4.0 pCi/l,
which has been the U.S. standard for over 20-years.
More than 100 scientists from 30 countries have
participated in the World Health Organization
International Radon Project since 2005 which has
lead to the publishing of the WHO Handbook on Indoor
Radon this year. The book is a useful resource for
concerned homeowners or anyone who wants to learn
more about the toxic carcinogen known as radon. It
outlines the years of research and the very
conclusive findings that have triggered a push for
stricter legislation and construction practices that
will reduce the risk of indoor radon exposure to the

The United Nations also broke new ground in the
international fight on radon-induced lung cancer
when they released their acknowledgement of the
radon problems throughout the world. This is

By encouraging people to take action when radon
levels exceed 2.7 rather than the previous limit of
4.0, we should see a dramatic increase in the number
of homes being tested and mitigated as well as
improved enforcement of radon resistant new
construction requirements, according to Jamey
Gelina, a radon mitigation specialist with Air
Quality Control Agency. His firm is one of the
largest companies in the U.S. that specializes in
installing radon removal equipment.

several milestones in its $1.2 billion-wind project.
The utility secured the easements for nearly 60,000
acres for wind farm development on the states east
side in Tuscola and Huron counties. The wind
farm will be called the Lakes Winds Energy Plant,
with a capacity for 100 megawatts with scheduled
operation beginning in 2010.
"We're pleased to reach these
significant milestones for our wind generation
plans. Wind holds great promise for Michigan as a
renewable energy source. Wind is expected to be the
primary means by which Consumers Energy will meet
Michigan's 10 percent renewable energy standard,"
said Linda Hilbert, Consumers Energy's manager of

2009...Independent power producer Caithness Energy™
signed a 1.4 billion dollar contract with GE for
wind turbines for its new 845 megawatt wind farm
project in Oregon. The wind farm is to be
called "Shepherds Flat". It has most of the
government permits to be built. When finished it
will be the largest wind farm in the US and the
world! “This project underscores our
commitment to harness the power of wind to meet
present and future energy needs while reducing
greenhouse emissions. The Shepherds Flat project
will add more renewable energy to the west coast’s
energy mix and help the region meet its demand for
clean energy,” said Les Gelber, a partner at
Caithness Energy. It will be spread over 30 square
miles of Gilliam and Morrow counties and have 338
2.5 megawatt turbines. Completion is expected
